It surpassed the TUF Dash F15 (70 fps) and Strix G15 Advantage (81 fps), but had trouble catching up to the Razer Blade 15 (86 fps). The Acer Predator Helios 300 nailed 84 fps on the Far Cry New Dawn benchmark (Ultra, 1080p), soaring over the 75-fps category average. It also toppled the TUF Dash F15’s RTX 3070 (51 fps), the Razer Blade 15’s RTX 3070 (64 fps) and the Strix G15 Advantage’s AMD Radeon RX 6800M (49 fps). On the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey benchmark (Ultra, 1080p), the Helios 300 averaged 68 fps, sliding past the average mainstream gaming laptop (50 fps). Packed with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 GPU with 8GB of VRAM, the Predator Helios 300 ran Assassin’s Creed Valhalla at a buttery smooth 70 frames per second on Ultra, 1080p settings as I dashed across a rainbow bridge on my way to kill a bunch of frost giants. And while switching to any of them did change the sound, it didn't make the speakers even remotely better.Īcer Predator Helios 300 (2021) gaming, graphics and VR There is an audio app called DTS:X Ultra that offers presets for music, voice, movies and gaming. Dialogue was the worst - I couldn’t make out what anyone was saying without subtitles. When I attacked people with my axe, all I heard was a hollow, sharp noise as my blade clashed with theirs. When I played Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the speakers aggressively highlighted the ambient noises way too much, causing a distorted bassy noise. I love this song, but I couldn’t stand listening to it on this laptop. The vocals sounded hollow and the percussion was muddled beneath the guitar. I listened to Dream State’s “I Feel It Too,” and my ears actually hurt from the wonky high-pitched electric guitar noises. The Predator Helios 300’s bottom-firing speakers are some of the worst I’ve tested on a gaming laptop. However, the touchpad handled Windows 10 gestures, like two-finger scrolling and three-finger tabbing, very well. It also offers a solid click, but the dip between the deck and the touchpad is too deep for my liking. The touchpad is smooth, but can be a little sticky sometimes. Also, the lighting software is barebones. The lighting is okay, but not as impressive as a per-key RGB-lit keyboard. The keyboard features four-zone RGB lighting that you can customize in the Lighting tab of the PredatorSense app. The keys are well spaced and there’s more than enough room on the deck for my palms to rest and work with. I hit 82 words per minute on the typing test, which is above my typical 78-wpm. I turned some of the graphics down so I can experience the high refresh rate, and it looked so smooth when I planted my ax into some foe’s neck. When I dove underwater to escape my captors, the bright display revealed everything beneath the river floor. I snuck around a set of docks in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and the greenery around me glowed as the sun set in the distance. Brosnan’s hair also looked particularly sharp. When Pierce Brosnan and his crew were discussing a plan in a dark room, the display was bright enough to reveal detail in the space behind them. In the trailer for The Misfits, the blue Lamborghini that raced across the street popped on the Helios 300’s display. It also sports a 240Hz refresh rate panel, which makes games look silky smooth. The Acer Predator Helios 300’s 15.6-inch, 1920 x 1080-pixel display is colorful and bright for a mainstream gaming laptop. LoR was also investigated in the current study, but not by separating the L2 speakers into two groups, but rather by examining the correlation between the L2 speakers’ production and their LoR in the UK. The current study aimed to partially replicate the findings of Flege and Port ( 1981), extending the experimental scope to include more vowels and examine the production of nonnative Saudi speakers of English in a different native language community, the United Kingdom. Length of residence (LoR) in the USA was not found to play any significant role in the production of the L2 speakers nonetheless, the findings were mixed and sometimes counterintuitive (e.g., those with shorter LoR produced longer durational contrast than those with longer LoR). However, variation between the L2 speakers was noticed and a few of them were found to approximate the durational patterns of the native English speakers. The L2 speakers were found to have a smaller durational contrast before voiced and voiceless stops in the production of /æ/ than the native English speakers. Such phonetic realizations are difficult for nonnative English speakers and may cause their speech to be recognized as foreign accented or even unintelligible (Flege, 1981 Tajima et al., 1997).įlege and Port ( 1981) compared the production of pre-fortis clipping by Saudi L2 English speakers, who were living in the USA, and a group of native American English speakers. For example, the /i:/ vowel in the word seat is shorter than the /i:/ vowel in the word seed. This has come to be known as pre-fortis clipping in English (Wells, 2019). Vowels before voiced obstruents in syllable-final position are considerably longer than when they occur before voiceless obstruents (Chen, 1970 Peterson and Lehiste, 1960 Wells, 2019). One of the main perceptual cues native English listeners use to distinguish syllable-final voiced and voiceless obstruents (i.e., stops, affricates, and fricatives) is the duration of the preceding vowels (Crowther and Mann, 1992 Raphael, 1972 Sanker, 2019). In addition, no significant correlation was found between the length of residence and the L2 speakers’ production. However, the results varied across the three examined vowels. Similar to the findings of Flege and Port (1981), both the Saudi native Arabic and L2 English speakers showed broadly less durational contrast between the vowels in the two contexts than did the native English speakers. A durational ratio of each vowel before /t/ to the same vowel before /d/ was calculated for each speaker in the native and nonnative groups. Similar vowels in a similar context were also obtained in Arabic from Saudi native speakers. The same vowels in the same context were also elicited from a reference group of native English speakers. 16 Saudi L2 English speakers were requested to produce the English vowels /æ/, /ɪ/ and /i:/ in a carrier word, once before the voiceless stop /t/ and once before the voiced stop /d/. In addition, it examined whether language experience operationalized as the length of residence in an English-speaking country, had any positive effect on the production of the pre-fortis clipping by the Saudi L2 English speakers. The current study is a partial replication of Flege and Port (Language Speech 24(2):125–146, 1981), which examined the production of pre-fortis clipping (i.e., vowel shortening before voiceless obstruents) by Saudi L2 English speakers. Vice was on its way to becoming a darling of media investors that would, at its likely high-water mark in 2017, be valued at $5.7 billion. We need to close the borders now and let everyone assimilate to a Western, white, English-speaking way of life.” An unnamed ex-staffer told The New Yorker “hat was the beginning of the end” of McInnes’ time with Vice.īy the time McInnes left Vice in 2008, the company had invested in creating digital video and gained notoriety for its provocative documentaries. He was also quoted by the Times saying, “I love being white and I think it’s something to be very proud of. After a letter writing campaign by a Black reader, Vice apologized for McInnes’ comment, The New York Times later reported. In a profanity-laced Q&A with New York Press in 2002, McInnes said he was glad that hipsters in Williamsburg, the Brooklyn neighborhood where Vice is headquartered, were White. McInnes, under aliases, wrote much of the content for Vice in its early days before they had a budget for freelancers, according to a New Yorker profile in 2013. They changed the name to Vice and later moved to New York City and expanded the magazine internationally. According to a profile in The Guardian in 2008, the three took control of the magazine after a falling out with the publisher. McInnes, along with Shane Smith and Suroosh Alvi, bought Voice of Montreal, a magazine funded by the Canadian government, in 1994. But he did co-found the alternative magazine that grew into what Vice Media is today, and he worked at Vice for 14 years. McInnes may not have any affiliation with Vice Media now. The email was first reported by The Wrap. Vice Media is once again working to distance itself from its co-founder, Gavin McInnes, who set much of the tone for the company in its early days before going on to found the Proud Boys, the far-right group whose ideology has been labeled “misogynistic, Islamophobic, transphobic, and anti-immigration” by the Anti-Defamation League. |
